Leprosy
Leprosy is an infectious disease that attacks the central nervous system, particularly the hands, face and feet. Official figures show that more than 213 000 people mainly in Asia and Africa are infected, with approximately 249 000 new cases reported in 2008. (WHO Factsheet Feb 2010).
Risk areas:
Many areas have now eliminated Leprosy, however there are still countries where it is endemic (WHO); Angola, Brazil, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, India, Madagascar, Mozambique, Nepal, and the United Republic of Tanzania.
Transmission:
It is transmitted via droplets, from the nose and mouth, during close and frequent contacts with untreated cases.
Symptoms:
Leprosy still remains difficult to diagnose even today, but symptoms include cuts on the body coupled with a lack of sensation.
Treatment:
The disease is curable, but its effectiveness depends on an early diagnosis.
