Waldenstrom's macroglobulinaemia: a rare
disorder which has features in common with an indolent non-hodgkin's lymphomaand with multiple myeloma. The
progression of the condition more closely resembles indolent non-hodgkin's lymphoma.
Wart: a skin growth caused by a virus.
Weal: a swollen red mark on the skin.
Wegener's granulomatosis: a form of vasculitis.
Weil's disease: a severe form of leptospirosis caused by leptospira
interrogans serogroup icterohaemorrhagica and transmitted to man by the
rat.
White blood cells (leukocytes): they comprise several
different types of cells within three main types:granulocytes, lymphocytes and monocytes. They are formed in the bone marrow and it is their
uncontrolled proliferation which leads to leukaemia.
Whooping cough: an infection of the lung caused by a certain type of
germ.
Williams syndrome: a non-hereditary syndrome which strikes at random and
can cause brain-damage in varying degrees, combined with some physical
side-effects.
Wilson's Disease: an inherited disorder causing too much copper to build
up in the liver, this can cause severe liver and brain damage if not
treated.
Wry neck: twisted or distorted neck; a deformity in which the neck is
drawn to one side by a rigid contraction of one of the muscles of the neck;
torticollis.
